I WAS interested to read the news in this week's Reporter about Debden Road Service Station closing.
It is the end of an era and very sad for the owner. I'm just glad that it is not going to close down his business. I lived at 10 West Road and bought my first car, an Austin 8 for £40 from the garage in 1966. My gran was very impressed with it when I took her for a drive in it!
Garage owner, Mr Forbes sold me the car. I noticed one of the rear doors didn't lock and when I told him, without hesitation he replied - "No, but all the others do"! I wonder if Chris White is the son of the lovely Mrs White, who used to serve in Cliff and Nancy Housden's shop next door and whether Mr White bought the garage from Mr Forbes?
