REGARDING the comment in the Reporter dated January 25 by one of your readers that Tesco bags are rarely seen blowing about, clearly they do not walk the stretch between Tesco and Sewards End, nor in the direction of the first set of traffic lights into Saffron Walden.
Along this route bags are very much in evidence snagged on wayside bushes. Furthermore we are constantly collecting bags that have blown into our development, which is only a couple of hundred yards from Tesco.
What is wrong with adopting the sensible French and Irish approach whereby heavy-duty, long-lasting and recyclable bags can be purchased from store check-outs? When in France we have found it no imposition taking these bags back to the store each time we wish to go shopping.
Let us hope that the combined pressure from the public to reduce litter in the countryside and the need to reduce unnecessary landfill will result in society adopting an enlightened approach to tackling this pervasive problem of plastic bag pollution.
