The march in London last month was proof of a turning of the tide of public opinion. As for economic advantage to the area from expansion: I used to work at the airport (in HR for World Duty Free).
The majority of airport related jobs are low-paid and the shifts are long and unsocial. Is it known that staff are recruited from North London and given free transport to the airport for their first year?
Local housing is far too expensive to be in reach of such workers. Don't be bullied into caving in to threats that are at heart based on self-interest and commercial acumen.
