WHEN I owned a business in Market Row a few years ago I, along with other traders, was threatened with enforcement action by Uttlesford District Council to remove our freestanding advertising board which stood outside our

various premises during opening hours.

These boards were deemed a hazard to blind, partially sighted or wheelchair bound individuals. Fair enough - but how come Starbucks can litter the pavement with numerous tables and chairs with apparent impunity? Are these not hazards also?

Or is it another case of

one law for the 'corporates' and something different for the small independent traders whose variety of services really do help to make this lovely market town of ours a joy for residents and visitors alike.
