SAFFRON Walden Town Hall witnessed an evening of high tension on Friday as the town’s inaugural Invitational Sports Quiz culminated in the tightest of finishes.
Rivalries were played out across the room. One of the organisers, Jim Ludden, said: “A swarm of Wendens Ambo Rugby Club members claimed bragging rights over Saffron Walden Rugby Club; the golf club made light of their inability to answer any golf questions to see off the youthful challenge of the cricket club.
“And Walden Tri had too much stamina for Saffron Striders, who proudly brought up the rear, partly because they struggled whenever there was a question on a ball game.”
Debden FC won the half-time picture round and proved their all-round credentials by mounting a final-round push to overtake long-term leaders Clavering Cricket Club, who were tragically hampered by their sketchy knowledge of cricket.
“Everyone gets the chance to have another go next year,” said Mr Ludden.
