FOR weeks now we've been assailed by letters complaining about the new wheelie bins.

Of course, there have been teething problems in the introduction of the new bins, but the knee-jerk negative reaction to anything new has been over done.

I think it's time Uttlesford was congratulated on raising our awareness of the problem of recycling and doing something about it.

This country has a truly dismal record in this area. In the Netherlands, 60 per cent of all waste is recycled; in the UK the figure is 16 per cent (third from bottom in the European league).

It's time to stop moaning and start helping to make things better. Is it really so difficult to sort out your rubbish and put it in the right bin?
