I'VE been following the correspondence regarding the 'improvements' to the Market Place with increasing puzzlement. Have I missed the consultation? The community was consulted over the previous scheme, which cost an estimated £70k; surely this much more costly (I've heard £170k) and much more dramatic scheme must be subject to consultation?

One of the things that concerns me is the proposed use of paviours. Have any of the people involved in the decision walked the streets of the town? If so, they must have become aware of the uneven surfaces of the paviours in the pavements - some are a real health and safety hazard. And this is the effect of only foot traffic. It seems a totally inappropriate surface to use where heavy goods traffic is involved.

In my opinion, the present neutral surface of the Market Place is the perfect background for the elaborate fountain, varied facades of the surrounding buildings and the colourful market stalls. I look forward to being consulted.
