ON BEHALF of the Saffron Walden Amnesty International Group, I would like to thank everyone who signed seasonal cards of greetings and solidarity.

Our special thanks go to the rector, the team vicar and the heads of Walden's two secondary schools for facilitating signing sessions, in addition to our own members who manned the two card signing sessions on market days outside the town hall.

In all 530 cards were mailed by the group. This was supplemented by group members sending their own cards.

The Greetings Card Campaign is a worldwide activity for Amnesty International members, friends and supporters.

The cards go, in their hundreds, to prisoners of conscience. It not only makes the recipients aware of the wave of goodwill reaching out to them, but it makes it clear to their jailers that their actions are under spotlight.

Amongst the prisoners highlighted in Saffron Walden, one in each of the last two years has been released.

We will, during 2007 look for news of the prisoners highlighted this year.

The group will continue to support campaigning areas AI UK has set itself.

New members are always welcome and are encouraged to contact group secretary Pam Gadsby on 01799 524471.
