ONCE again it is the school summer holidays and those of us who work in the town can breathe a sigh of relief that we can get into work in a timely fashion and don't have to allow a minimum of an additional 20 minutes for sitting in the traffic waiting for the 'school run' commuters to get out of the way.
It occurred to me while enjoying a few extra minutes in bed due to the delightfully jam-free traffic that it would be a marvellous idea for these deliverers of students to organise a 'car pool' and collect enough children to fill their cars, usually seven-seat people carriers, to capacity once a week.
Each driver would then only have the chore to perform once a week, and for those with a bog standard car which could only carry three or four passengers, maybe twice a week.
Thus many of the people could be pleased much of the time. The awfulness of the traffic would be eased by as much as half.
The drivers delivering students would save petrol and stress and those who also work and do the school run would enjoy several free mornings a week.
No, on further reflection this would provide too much of a common sense solution to a ubiquitous problem and also would necessitate these people actually communicating with each other. Still, the thought was there.
