Part of Saffron Walden High Street remains cordoned off this evening (Thursday) after electricity cables caught fire underneath the pavement.
Firefighters were called to the incident this morning shortly after 10am. A crew from Saffron Walden remained on standby with a foam branch layed out while the electricity company isolated the power.
The incident was left in the care of the electricity company about about midday.
UK Power Networks engineers were still evaluating the cause of the fire this evening having dug up part of the pathway near to the traffic lights at the junction with George Street.
Motorists have been forced to negotiate the junction without the signals, which have been temporarily turned off while the engineers sort the cabling problem.
