An 18-year-old lifeguard is running the London Marathon for the first time to raise money in his grandfather’s memory.
Cambridge Regional College student Domenic Wilson, of Hempstead Road, Radwinter, who went to Saffron Walden County High School, is raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Domenic’s grandfather, Brian Wilson, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in his late 50s and died at the age of 62.
“I wanted to do it in his memory,” said Domenic, a part-time lifeguard at the Lord Butler Leisure Centre. “I was only little when he died but he was quite sporty himself in his youth. I’ve been training hard – doing lots of swimming and running – and although I don’t feel quite ready yet, I will be on the day.”
He added: “I’ve watched the marathon on TV a few times and it looks like a quality atmosphere. I’d love to do it in a costume like a lot of people do but I’d never be able to last!”
