FIREFIGHTERS were called to Newport this week after a road sweeper caught alight.
Two crews from Saffron Walden were called ut to Shortgrove Hall in Newport Road shortly after 10am on Wednesday (October 13).
They needed hydraulic cutting equipment, two hose reel jets and wore breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze, which they extinguished after about an hour.
Saffron Walden fire station commander Paul Curtis said: “The fire was in the engine of the street-sweeper and it had melted the hydraulic hoses so we were unable to open it up to get to the engine.
“We used our hydraulic cutting equipment to get to the engine and once we had cut our way in the fire was quickly extinguished. Crews worked hard and did a good job tackling this fire.”
