Saffron Walden Initiative is presenting an array of Christmas events for families to enjoy in the town this year.

The events are celebrating poet William Winstanley of Quendon, who was known as the 'man who saved Christmas' by reinstating Christmas traditions following the time of Oliver Cromwell.

Winstanley Christmas charity stall late night shopping will take place from 4pm to 9pm on December 2, sponsored by Saffron Hall, Bentens, the town council, and councillors Heather Asker, Richard Freeman and Paul Fairhurst.

There will be live music, food and drink stalls, and the closing date for stalls is November 25.

A Christmas shop and business windows competition, sponsored by Saffron Hall, will follow the theme of the '12 days of Christmas'.

The closing date is November 30 with judging to take place on December 7.

The Winstanley House and Gardens competition, sponsored by the Saffron Walden market traders, is calling for suggestions for low-cost decorations such as LED, candles and oil lamps. The closing date is December 8 for judging on December 15.

Entry forms for all the events are available from the Tourist Information Office.

Jacqui Portway, from the Saffron Walden Initiative, said: "We want to let the true and magical story of William Winstanley lift up the economy of local businesses."
