Four and five-year-olds have been invited to join scouts in Saffron Walden as part of the new 'Squirrel Scouts' initiative.

On October 20, the 5th Saffron Walden Scout Group welcomed 15 children and four leaders into their new Squirrel Scout drey - which is the name for a squirrel's nest.

The Squirrel Scouts, who wear red sweatshirts, are the youngest and newest section in scouting, which was launched in the UK in September last year following a two-year pilot programme. They are the first new section since the introduction of Beaver Scouts 35 years ago.

Squirrel Scout leader Debbie Gibson said: "I have been a leader in Saffron Walden for three years and with the news that squirrels was opening in town for four and five year olds I knew I wanted to be involved.

"Scouting has bought me new friendships and I have gained many new skills too. Being part of the first squirrel section not only in town but our district to open has been amazing.

"Investing 15 squirrels at the end of our six-week pilot, shows that this age group are just as keen to earn badges, make new friends and learn new skills as any other section in the movement.

"I and the new leadership team can't wait to deliver even more fun and exciting experiences to start the squirrels off on their scouting journey.”

During the course of the six-week pilot in Saffron Walden, the squirrels have enjoyed toasting marshmallows over fires, learning about first aid, celebrating World Sight Day and taking part in adventures in the woods.

Next term they will be developing their water skills and hoping to go on their first camp in 2023.

They will also appear in the town's Remembrance Day parade on November 13.

District commissioner Nigel Bailey said: "That 5th Saffron Walden is one of the first groups in the county to open a squirrel drey is fantastic news and is great testament  to the foresight and commitment of the group."
