Dig It Community Allotment recently welcomed the Mayor of Saffron Walden, Cllr James de Vries, who gave them an award for their hard work.

The volunteers were presented with the first place award for 'best kept allotment' at Byrds Allotments in Crocus Field.

Over the last four years, Dig It has grown significantly and delivers sessions over three days per week.

Volunteers grow produce and learn about horticulture, while maintaining the site - going all the way from propagating seeds right through to harvesting what is grown.

Dig It also works closely with the local community, including their partners Saffron Walden Mencap Society and Café Cornell, which both help people with learning, mental and physical disabilities.

The collaboration includes groups being involved in growing 'from plot to plate', where they share a meal of the fresh produce they have grown, learn about food preparation and the benefits of a healthy diet. This also aims to reduce isolation through the social activity of enjoying an activity together.

Dig It recently adapted their allotment to provide wheelchair access and raised beds, making it accessible to all abilities. The outdoor space aims to offer a calm, inclusive and social setting to benefit people with disabilities.

Laura Thompson-Harper, project manager for Dig It, said: "This award has meant so much to our volunteers, who are so passionate about the allotment and Dig It activities.

"We have been fortunate to partner with Café Cornell & Saffron Walden Mencap Society who have continued to grow the project from strength to strength.

"This award could never have been achieved without the hard work and enthusiasm of our many volunteers – we would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for what they do and for being a part of our project.

"It was an absolute pleasure to host the Mayor and have volunteers express the importance of Dig It and our impact among beneficiaries."

Dig It offers outdoor activity in the Saffron Walden community and surrounding areas.
