A sixth-former crocheted a Remembrance-themed topper for a pillar box in Saffron Walden.

Yarn bombers have been active in Dunmow for a number of years, but have not yet been seen in Saffron Walden.

Sixth-form student Anna started working on the topper - which adorned the pillar box in the town's market square - at the end of September.

Around 250 grams of green wool was used to make the hat, and around 200 grams were used to make the 40 poppies.

The pillar box is unusually oval-shaped, and Anna had to secretly try the hat on the top for size, before creeping under cover of darkness last Wednesday night, to fit the topper on before Armistice Day on Friday and the parade on Sunday.

Anna has also set up a crochet club at her school for younger pupils, and may have plans to create further pillar box toppers for Saffron Walden in the future.

The photo of Anna with the box was taken by photographer Celia Bartlett, who spotted Anna and her mother wearing crocheted flowers near the pillar box while she was taking photos.

Yarn bombing is a form of harmless street art which uses colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk.
