Cook and food historian Monica Askay will appear at Saffron Walden Museum this month for a demonstration on the history of salads.

The demonstration and tasting, on Monday, June 13, complements the museum's current exhibition 'Feeding the Family'.

Visitors can learn about salads from medieval times to the 18th century, with their colourful and sometimes surprising ingredients.

Participants will be able to see three different salads assembled and compare their different tastes.

Copies of historical salad recipes from different periods will be provided for people to take home, hopefully inspiring them to have a go at their own versions.

Monica Askay said: "It is fascinating to see how salads have developed through the ages.

"The range and combination of ingredients are truly inspiring."

The 'Feeding the Family' exhibition runs until July 9, and explores the history of food preparation and food serving from Roman times to the present day.

Throughout history, people have laboured to put food on the table. In the exhibition, the museum draws on its own collections and historical sources to see what local families might have been preparing and eating over the last 2,000 years.

Visitors to the exhibition will get a chance to see original recipes, as well as typical dishes and tableware from each time period.

To accompany the display there will also be mystery food smells to identify, and visitors can decorate a plate with a picture of their favourite meal to add to the display.

Alongside the exhibition, the museum has partnered with Uttlesford Foodbank to help visitors learn more about its vital work helping people in the district who are struggling to feed their families.

The salad demonstration and tasting will take place from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, and soft drinks will be provided to accompany the tasting.

There are places for 15 adults at a cost of £40 per person, so advance booking is recommended via https://saffron-walden-museum.arttickets.org.uk/.

The ticket includes free admission to the museum from 1.30pm on the day.

Participants must be 18 or over. Anyone with questions about allergens can contact the museum by emailing museum@uttlesford.gov.uk or calling 01799 510333.
