A Saffron Walden runner took on a charity challenge to raise money in memory of his gran.

Jack Forster, 25, completed the Great North Run half-marathon for the third time on Sunday, September 10 - braving scorching temperatures.

This year, he was raising money for St Benedict's Hospice in Sunderland, which looked after his grandmother Norma before her death from lung cancer.

Jack said: "Third time is the charm they say, but this run felt like climbing a mountain in the heat.

"By the nine mile point it felt like hitting a brick wall. I was determined to finish with the love and support from my family, the amazing crowd and of course the thought of my gran."

Jack managed to complete the course in two hours and six minutes, making it the second fastest of his three runs.

He said: "This time it was in memory of Norma Forster and for a great charity that looked after her during the last week of her life.

"I can't thank St Benedict's Hospice enough for the love and support they offered my gran and my family during her last days."

Norma was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2022, and battled the disease for nearly 11 months before her death - even catching covid during that time.

Along with her husband Billy, Norma frequently visited Saffron Walden and was known by people in the town.

Speaking about the day of the run, Jack said: "Her presence was felt by everyone, and the day was topped off when I finished and was greeted with family as the Red Arrows came over with a display.

"I want to thank the girls, Emily, Helen and Diane Forster who waited for me at the finish line (but made me walk two miles to the car park!)"

So far Jack has raised more than £500, surpassing his initial £300 target, but is hoping to get it up to £600.

The money will support St Benedict's Hospice's work providing end-of-life care, advice and support for patients and their families.
