Planning consent has been granted for 170 dwellings in Saffron Walden - and the town council is asking for residents' help to protect a walking route at the site.

The homes will be built in West Thaxted Road, neighbouring the land commonly referred to as the Green Mile, adjacent to the skate park.

The application site was previously in the ownership of Kier Ventures, and the town council believes it has since been sold to Chase New Homes.

This summer fencing was installed around the site in preparation for works to begin.

The fields are commonly used as a walking route by residents, however it is not registered as a formal right of way with Essex Highways.

While fencing is installed, pedestrians do not have access to the walking route, so Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) is seeking to register the route with Essex County Council Legal Services.

Residents are asked to complete a consultation form on the SWTC website at https://saffronwalden.gov.uk/news/thaxted-road-proposed-prow/.

Paper copies are also available from the Tourist Information Centre.

The town council requires formal evidence of use from residents in order to complete the registration application.

Responses must be submitted by 9am on Monday, November 13.
