On Remembrance Sunday, Mayor Asker,  Saffron Walden Town Council, the local branch of the Royal British Legion, the army, police and uniformed groups gathered at the War Memorial for a two-minute silence and the laying of wreaths.

This was followed by a service at St Mary's Church, after which the parade marched to the Market Square.

Among those attending was retired GP and navy veteran Dr John Eaton, who had three generations of his family in the parade.

A town council spokesperson said: "Thanks to residents and organisations who participated in the service for the smooth-running of the respectful service in remembrance of the fallen and those that serve our country."

Wreaths were laid by two members of Sewards End Youth Club, Arthur and George, and by Ilene Webster, who is one of the last surviving WWII Land Girls.

Church warden Michael Dean commented:  "Ilene lives locally and independently in Sewards End and has been laying a wreath at this service for many years.

"It is wonderful to still be able to celebrate this link after all the time that has passed since the end of the war. "
