A community fridge has been introduced in Saffron Walden in a bid to cut down on food waste.

Saffron Walden Town Council, Uttlesford Community Action Network (UCAN), and Enterprise East Group CIC (EE) jointly launched the fridge as part of the Jubilee Hub Partnership.

Opening its doors in April 2023, the Jubilee Hub provides a safe, welcoming space, designed to meet the needs of community members while providing an all-inclusive space for activities.

The community fridge, managed by UCAN, will be stocked daily with food supplied by outlets in the town, including fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, and more.

The fridge is open on weekdays from 9.30am to 4pm, and no booking is necessary.

The focus is eliminating food waste rather than combating food poverty.

A Saffron Walden Town Council spokesperson said: "Making good use of this food, is not only a great way to supplement the Uttlesford Foodbank offer for residents, but also reduces food wastage in our town."

Food and hospitality businesses interested in taking part in the waste reducing initiative can make collection arrangements by emailing connect@ucan.org.uk.

Businesses can either take part on an ad hoc basis or as regular contributors.
