Saffron Walden band The Flying Symbols are celebrating after being named winners of the Cambridge Band Competition 2024 at Cambridge Junction.

The competition has been running since 1985 - making it the longest-running band competition in the UK - with 108 bands applying to take part.

The Flying Symbols consists of lead vocalist Pete Cornell, drummer Mat Drewing, John Clements on bass and Joe Boutell on guitar.

Pete said: "I have never been so high, to win the Cambridge Band Cambridge Band Competition with my brothers The Flying Symbols. To try to explain how happy I am is impossible.

"Just to play on the stage at the junction was in itself an honour, to play alongside some of the best bands in Cambridge - in my eyes they all won!

"Thank you to my brothers in arms, Martin David Porter who without none of this would have been possible, my children - just seeing their beautiful faces in the crowd and the pride in their smiles, my amazing Meghan Lucy Parkin who is there every step of the way.

"Ken Vincent I miss you and I know you were standing right beside me - you always said I would be a superstar.

"Thank you to everyone that came to support not just us but all the bands, without you there is no live music."
