Young singers are invited to try out a taster session for the junior choir at St Mary's Church, Saffron Walden.

Oliver King, the church's director of music, said: "Does your child love singing?

"We have a strong and lively junior choir at St Mary’s and are now looking to recruit some enthusiastic young singers in the eight to 12 age group to join us as we move forward in our long-held choral tradition at St Mary’s."

The taster session will take place in the church's parish rooms from 6pm to 7.45pm on Friday, June 21.

There will also be an opportunity to sing at the 10.30am Sunday service following the taster session.

To register for the Taster Session or for more information, please contact Oli King or Hannah Razzell at music@stmaryssaffronwalden.org.

St Mary's has a junior choir with up to 20 members, and the juniors are paid for their practices and their role in services.

The choir sings at three or four Sunday services a month, either a morning service or evensong, and at some weddings on Saturdays - for which they receive extra money.

There are also occasional concerts and visits to cathedrals, and children in the choir have their own social programme - providing an opportunity to meet new friends and learn lots of new music.

Rehearsals are held on Friday evenings, and the choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) which helps to support a free, high quality choral education.

Oliver added: "The benefits of singing in a choir are enormous and increasingly well documented.

"Choral singing is essentially a team sport which is both fun and stimulating, but just as importantly, helps to set the next generation of young musicians up for life!"

Members of the junior choir, who are aged between eight and 12, work through the RSCM Voice for Life training scheme ribbon tests to attain seniority, which is reflected in the remuneration they receive.

Older teenagers have the option of becoming a choral scholar.
