Under bright blue skies, tens of Katherine Semar pupils came out to celebrate the opening of their new Musical Maze playground last Friday.

The turfed sensory play area, complete with slide, bridge, tunnels and brightly coloured drums, was built over the winter and officially opened by Peter Riding of Saffron Walden Initiative, which has organised two maze festivals for the town.

“We are delighted that the town has its fourth permanent maze,” said Mr Riding.

A fundraising group raised £28,000 from events and donations for the maze’s construction, which was carried out by Ace of Spades Landscapes, based in Bishop’s Stortford.

“We’ve been working towards a big project for a considerable amount of time,” said Katherine Semar Infant School headteacher, Rachel Callaghan.

“It’s just going to mean so much to all of the children who come to the school, it’s an amazing thing for the community.”
