NEWPORT'S streets were paved with gold at the weekend when the village's amateur theatrical society performed Dick Whittington.

The society put on their annual pantomime at the village hall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Member Lyndsey Millington said the shows attracted big audiences and the final performance on Sunday afternoon was a complete sell-out.

"Newport Amateur Theatrical Society has been going for about nine years and we always do an annual panto and, for the last three years, we've put on a play in the summer," she said.

"We've got about 30 members in the society, ranging from children to 60-year-olds, and everyone took part in the production, with about 20 on stage and also people backstage helping with the lighting and costumes."

Lucy Millington played the lead role and the panto was directed by Yvonne Hannant.

"The production was well supported, with Sunday's performance being completely sold out," said Lyndsey Millington.

"There are lots of outgoings but we usually make a little bit of profit and the money goes back into the society to keep it going.
