People planning to watch the Tour de France when it visits Essex are being asked to ‘respect, protect and enjoy’ the environment as they take in the spectacle of the world’s largest annual sporting event.

It is expected the number of spectators for Stage Three of the Tour on Monday, July 7 will surpass that for the Olympic Torch Relay in Essex in 2012.

Cllr Ann Naylor, cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, said: “We want as many people as possible to come to Essex and enjoy this fantastic event but also be aware of their surroundings.

“We are blessed with some of the most beautiful villages and idyllic countryside in the country. We are extremely proud and honoured to have the Tour de France in Essex but at the same time we want it to have as little impact on our wonderful landscape as possible.

“The Tour is a great opportunity to showcase Essex. Spectators can enjoy the race, entertainment and activities we have arranged to celebrate the day whilst taking care and respecting the environment.”
