Christmas pudding lovers in Saffron Walden were given the chance to mix a huge basin of ingredients and make a wish at the Courtyard Tea Room last Sunday (November 20).

Cole’s Puddings’ annual Stir Up Sunday event attracted many who wanted to take part in the ancient tradition of pudding making – with each stirrer going home with a Cole’s brandy pud.

This year, the company invited people to arrive in festive fancy dress and Lily Ella Beetlestone, who stirred the mixture dressed as a Christmas tree, was crowned as the winner.

Traditionally, Christmas puddings, with silver sixpences, were made at home with all the family taking turns to stir the mix while making a secret wish, which took place on Stir Up Sunday - the last Sunday before Advent.

It is thought that the words from an Anglican prayer: “Stir up we beseech thee oh Lord….” were used to remind church goers to make their puddings in preparation for Christmas festivities.

Simon Hatcher, director of Cole’s Puddings, said: “Our annual Stir Up Sunday event is a great opportunity for families to share the fun and to be part of this ancient tradition of pudding making – mixing dried fruits, suet, spices and a touch of brandy.

“We asked the young and young at heart to arrive in festive dress and Lily’s outfit was amazing.”
