HARDWORKING and community-spirited people were commended at a ceremony in Saffron Walden last Thursday.

Uttlesford District Council presented 30 prizes at the Community Achievement Awards, held at its London Road offices, to recognise the efforts of youth group leaders, charity workers and others who have made a difference to the district in the last year.

Council chairman, Cllr Alan Row, gave framed certificates to the winners and Paul Garland, chairman of the Local Agenda 21 Group, presented the Mary Porter Award for Environmental Awareness to Saffron Walden County High School, Chrishall Holy Trinity and St Nicholas CE Primary School.

The winners of the Community Achievement Awards were rewarded for time and commitment shown to helping people.

There were 16 winners in the Service to the Local Community category and nine victors in the Service to Children and Young People class. Other awards went to those who had enriched the lives of the young, the elderly and the disabled in Uttlesford.
