TWO men arrested in connection with the bank robbery in Saffron Walden on Friday have been released on police bail.

The 21-year-old and 25-year-old from Cambridgeshire will answer bail on December 12, after police have conducted further inquiries to find out what happened in the raid, at the NatWest bank in the market square.

It was shortly before 9am when a panic button was pressed at the bank, when staff say an armed robber threatened them with what appeared to be a handgun.

A police spokesman said: "Staff describe the man as being of medium build and height, wearing a dark t-shirt with stripes across it, jeans, trainers and a balaclava."

The alleged raider locked the four staff members in the vault area before leaving the bank with a substantial amount of cash.

Police say they are keeping an open mind about how many people were involved in the robbery and reiterated their appeal for help from the public.

They believe the robbery was premeditated and would like to hear from anyone who was in the area between 7am and 9am on Friday who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously, or anyone who noticed someone loitering around the bank area in the days prior to the raid.

Anyone who has information that might help police should contact Braintree CID on 0300 3334444.
