A BELATED Christmas present was given to Saffron Walden Community Hospital by Ridgeons in the shape of a new bed.

Staff at the timber and builders' merchant's Ashdon Road branch raised more than £1000 in the week before the festive holiday.

And the company donated a further £1000 to ensure the bed for the hospital's Avocet Ward could be bought.

Security members Denise Chapman and Ian Newman and canteen supervisor Sue Walker were the driving force behind the fund-raising.

Mr Newman said: "Denise and I wanted to secure some new equipment for our local and valuable hospital.

"When we found out a new bed was top of their list, we new what we had to aim for.

"We had so much support and contributions from staff and customers. It brought it home to us how keen people were to see us get the bed."

A treasure hunt, tombola and a cash collection were among the fund-raisers.

At Tuesday's presentation, a hospital spokesman said: "Beds are expensive and we're delighted to now have 27 beds on Avocet Ward.
