Body of teenager found on tracks

A DEAD body of a man, believed to be an 18-year-old from Newport, was found at Great Chesterford train station on Saturday (June 7) morning. The British Transport Police (BTP) received a report that the body had been found on the tracks just before 6.15am

A DEAD body of a man, believed to be an 18-year-old from Newport, was found at Great Chesterford train station on Saturday (June 7) morning.

The British Transport Police (BTP) received a report that the body had been found on the tracks just before 6.15am. The incident was attended by officers from the BTP and Saffron Walden Police Station.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained.

Investigating officer, Det Insp Will Jordan from BTP, said: "We are pursuing several lines of enquiry and I would urge anyone who may have information about this incident or who was at or near to the station in the early hours of the morning to contact us."

Formal identification is yet to take place, however the police believe the deceased is a Newport teenager. The body was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Train services on the Great Chesterford line were severely disrupted for over five hours as a result of the incident. The line was handed back to Network Rail at 11.22am.
