A man accused of trying to rape a young woman he met in a Saffron Walden pub claimed in court today that she was “willingly involved”.

Bookkeeper Yunus Cetin, now 31, who was visiting his brother in Saffron Walden at the time, invited the 21-year-old and her friend back to his brother Yakin’s flat in Hilltop Lane when the pub, the Temeraire, closed.

He said they began kissing in the kitchen and both went into the bedroom, neither saying anything. Cetin said he spoke very little English. They had talked in the pub using an Apple translation app on his mobile phone.

Speaking through an interpreter at Chelmsford Crown Court, Turkish born, Cetin continued: “The girl started to take her clothes off at the top. I still had my clothes on. She took her lower clothes off. I took mine off.

“We were kissing, we were having sex. Nothing about what was happening made me feel she didn’t want to do what was taking place.”

He added that she used her hand to guide him. He said they had sex for two to three hours. At one point, when she went to the bathroom and returned, he took a Viagra tablet.

She asked him about condoms. Cetin said he looked in the room but couldn’t find any but they continued to have sex.

Cetin, who is still staying with his brother in Hilltop Lane, pleads not guilty to two offences of attempted rape; one offence of assault by penetration; and to one offence of attempted assault by penetration on November 17 2013.

The alleged victim claims that she was happy with the kissing and she eventually, reluctantly, let him take off her top, but then started struggling when he tried to take off her jeans.

She alleges that he pinned her down. She claims she asked him to stop but he continued to try and have sex until he suddenly rolled off her and said “I’m so sorry I shouldn’t have done that”.

Giving evidence, Cetin said the woman’s friend, who had been lying down on the living room sofa, came into the bedroom while they were kissing on the bed and said they had to go. The woman got dressed and they left.

They returned a few minutes later and the complainant appeared to be looking for something.

When his brother, who spoke better English, told him the girl said he had raped her, he laughed.

“I thought this is a joke or something. I didn’t understand it, it didn’t make sense,” Cetin told the court.

He said he woke up a couple of hours later to find the police there and he was arrested.

The trial continues.
