Clavering Bowls Club received a donation from the village’s supermarket thanks to a charitable initiative.

The M & M supermarket Nisa Local runs a scheme which sees money raised from customer purchases being donated in support of community projects.

President of the bowls club, Malcolm Smither, was joined by chairman Mike Patmore and other members to accept a cheque for £450 earlier this month.

The cash will go towards replacing the heavy duty boards which surround the bowls green.

Sue Hollingworth, a member of the 26-strong club, said: “Although these boards have received regular maintenance since the establishment of the club over 30 years ago, inevitably these do have a finite life and it’s necessary to replace those that show signs of rotting, in order to ensure safety on the green.

“The club is most anxious to replace these, and the substantial costs involved will be greatly assisted by the funds contributed by the Nisa donation, for which the club is most grateful. It is marvellous to have the money available for projects like this and helps us enormously.”

The club is always on the look-out for new members, who Sue said can enjoy being in playing “a jolly good game in a sociable atmosphere”.

Manager of the M & M supermarket, Muru Visana, said it was “great to do something for the local community”. “The money goes to any organisation that needs it. They can approach us saying what funds they need and if the money is available there’s a good chance they’ll be successful,” he said.
