East Street was closed to allow for emergency repairs to take place, forcing cars to drive via the Common.

Dennis Clark, who reported the problem, said: “The water was been running for around 50 hours plus, and it’s treated water, that’s we’re paying for.”

Buses of schoolchildren were also stuck in the mayhem, but one driver was allowing pupils off to buy drinks and snacks.

Affinity Water said: “We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by a burst on a water main in Saffron Walden yesterday afternoon.

“Our technicians repaired the main on the same day and the road has been reinstated. The barriers have been left in place to allow time for the surface to set and they are due to be removed tomorrow.”
