YOUNG people can now find information, advice and support on issues affecting them by visiting a bus parked in Saffron Walden.

Essex County Council’s youth mobile bus will be available in the Market Square every Tuesday in August and will be run by experienced youth workers.

The aim is to help young people, many of whom will soon be receiving exam results, with their future education and careers. Advisers will also help tackle wider issues such as health, relationships and personal development.

The first session was held on Tuesday and personal adviser, Anne Pressman, said they had had a good response from young people and adults.

“In the morning we had four young people come in one after the other and we sat down and had a chat to them,” she said. “It’s been really positive and we’re raising the profile of youth services that are on offer here, particularly as it’s the school holidays.

“We are here to help with any issues that young people want to talk to us about, whether it’s advice on what to do after their exams or problems they are having at school like bullying.”

The service is being run by Connexions which provides young people aged 13 to 19 with free and impartial information and guidance on their life choices. Some young people with additional needs can get support up to the age of 25.

Connexions run a regular advice centre, known as The Access Point, at the Fairy Croft Youth Centre in Saffron Walden on Tuesdays from 2.30pm to 5pm. In Dunmow the service is held in the Juice Bar on Wednesdays from 2.30pm to 5pm.

Youth worker Jiff Godfrey said: “We are here to help young people and also their parents. Some young people find it difficult to go into an adult environment, but equally, parents can find it difficult to go into a youth centre to ask questions.”

Young people can get help on the bus putting together their CVs and covering letters, as well as tips on searching for jobs and succeeding in interviews.
