A Saffron Walden action group has reignited its campaign to protect a historic town pub from being turned into housing.

STRAP – Save the Railway Arms Pub – applied to register the pub as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) two years ago but the validity of the group was brought into question.

Saffron Walden Town Council has now applied to register the pub as an ACV, which means that owners must inform the local authority if they wish to sell the property.

If a community group wants to buy the building, they can trigger a moratorium for six months, to give them a chance to raise money for the purchase.

However, the ACV does not require the owner to sell to a community group, or at a discounted price.

STRAP’s AGM is being held tomorrow night (Wednesday, February 15) at the Kings Arms pub at 7.45pm.
