More than 50 people, armed with banners and placards, showed their support for the campaign to save a historic Saffron Walden pub at the weekend.

Campaigners are fighting to save the Railway Arms, in Station Road, from being turned into housing and want the building to become Saffron Walden’s first-ever community owned pub.

The Railway was registered as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) by Uttlesford District Council in March, which means a six-month moratorium can be activated to allow community groups the opportunity to bid for the pub.

A public meeting, held at Saffron Walden Town Hall last month, saw more than 130 people launch the Save the Railway Arms Pub (STRAP) share issue scheme. More than £80,000 has already been pledged towards the campaign’s £240,000 target.

Pledge forms are available at the Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre or click here to visit STRAP’s website or call Dave Kenny on 07947 169491 for more information.
