A CARING Saffron Walden teenager who likes helping people has been nominated for Essex Police Young People of the Year.

Daniel Vinson, 17 was nominated for the prestigious award by his grandmother, Rosa Bates.

She said: "Daniel has a very caring nature and is ready to give a hand where needed."

Daniel's passion for helping stretches back several years.

His mum Carole had a kidney transplant in 1986 but this started to fail in the early 2000s. In 2004 Daniel, then aged 13, decided to cheer his mum by decorating the front of their house with Christmas lights.

Sadly, Carole died in September that year from kidney failure but Daniel, helped by his older brother Chris, still went ahead with the decorations and raised £332 for Addenbrooke's Hospital for treating his late mum.

The youngster's next project was to help out with the youth club in Great Chesterford each week for three years, while he later helped at the Vocational Bible School.

He does babysitting locally and looks after people's pets and plants while they are on holiday. He also helps at village functions.

His big passion is the Farm Club at Saffron Walden County High, which he attended until last year. He likes to help there once a week in addition to helping an annual dog show, Easter event and Christmas fair.

Daniel said: "I like helping anybody. I was very young when my mum was ill but I wanted to do something to cheer her up."

He is now in the running to win a top cash prize of £1000.

* YOPEY closes to entries, aged 10-25, this Saturday (January 31). Young people can enter themselves. To nominate visit www.yopey.org or write to Essex Police YOPEY, PO Box 103, Hare Street, Ware SG9 0XD. Stansted Airport hotel Radisson will be hosting a lavish awards ceremony in March.
