Ahead of their grand arrival at the Saffron Walden carnival, the procession’s royal household spent time getting ready at a hair salon in the town.

Carnival queen Mollie Blake, 24, and the runners-up of the competition, Jade Ellis, Sophie Fenwick, and Meg Goddard spent time at M Riccio Hair Design before donning their dresses and tiaras for the big day.

This year’s queen is the owner of popular Cross Street eatery, Tea-Amo, and the 24-year-old said she took part in the contest for her grandmother, who also once part of the royal procession.

Jade, 19, works in customer service and this too is the first time entering the competition, and had 20 family members on the day cheering her on.

Sophie, 21, is training as a nursery practitioner at the Bell Nursery in the town, and admitted it was only once friends twisted her arm that she applied for the contest.

The competition was also the first of its kind for Meg, 19, who said she knew from a previous queen just how much fun the day was.
