AFRICA came to life for over 80 youngsters at the Saffron Walden Museum on Tuesday.

The children, who ranged from toddlers to teenagers, made Zulu shields from wallpaper, made paintings of Nigerian tribal symbols and followed a trail around the museum which saw them uncover the ancient world of Egypt.

The museum's education officer, Jenny Gibsone, said: "The children absolutely loved learning about the wonderful and beautiful continent of Africa.

"They showed real creativity and imagination in their artwork and were fascinated at seeing all of the exhibits on the trail, including rocks, fossils and shields.

"The parents and grandparents got involved as well, and some of them ended up getting messier than the youngsters!"

A second Africa day was held on Wednesday and the museum is holding two similar events on August 22 and 23, with the Arctic being the theme.

"Children can come along for free as the events are designed to attract people who wouldn't normally think of visiting the museum," Mrs Gibsone said.

Adult admission costs £1 and you can find out more about the Arctic days by telephoning 01799 510333.
