CHILDREN at the St Thomas More School in Saffron Walden are eagerly awaiting a response after they sent out dozens of messages attached to helium balloons.

As part of the topic they worked on last term, the 30 children in the school's reception class released a balloon each and watched as they went up into the sky and were carried out of sight by the wind.

Nicki Morgan, who co-teaches the reception class with Tess Jones, said the children enjoyed seeing the balloons off.

"They loved it," she said. "They all waved the balloons off and keep asking if we've heard anything back yet. We still haven't, but we're hopeful and are still waiting in anticipation!

"Letting the balloons off was a good way to end the first half of term, and end the topic the children have been doing on journeys. Other projects have included a traffic survey at the top of South Road, and looking at the different means of transport, such as ways of travelling by air, water and road.
