The handover event is one of pomp and ceremony, with mayor making taking place at the Town Hall before the town council processed through Saffron Walden – complete with the Mace – to the “churching” ceremony held at St Mary’s Church.

The High Sheriff of Essex also attended the event.

Cllr Freeman’s wife Jan will be the mayor’s official consort, while the deputy mayor is Cllr Paul Fairhurst.

The mayor represents the town at a range of civic events, as well as presiding over the town council as chairman.

Cllr Freeman, who was mayor in 2005/06, has chosen two charities for the year – Music for Thought, based at Saffron Hall, and the Saffron Walden Dementia Action Alliance.
