Construction work has begun on a new housing development on the former Ridgeons site in Saffron Walden.

Work has begun after Bloor Homes was granted permission last month to begin building 160 homes on the 12 acre brownfield site off Ashdon Road.

The first homes are due to go on sale this summer.

The Mortimers Gate development will contribute funding of more than £1 million towards local services and infrastructure as well as its range of two to four bedroom homes.

Part of the site was previously Ridgeons timber and builders merchants, which has now moved to new premises to the east of the site.

Terry Tedder, Regional Managing Director at Bloor Homes Eastern, said: “We are delighted that construction work is now underway at Mortimers Gate, and we look forward to transforming this brownfield site into an attractive new neighbourhood close to Saffron Walden’s historic town centre.

“The development will feature a wide range of house types, which have been carefully designed to accommodate a variety of lifestyles.”
