A CAMPAIGN has been launched to get the speed limit in an Uttlesford village reduced.

Ugley remains the only settlement on the B1383 from Great Chesterford to Stansted to have a 50 mph limit.

But, after carrying out a survey of residents over the summer, district councillor for the village, Geoffrey Sell, is campaigning to get the speed limits on Cambridge Road and North Hall Road taken down.

Currently, the speed limit for Cambridge Road is 50mph and North Hall Road is 60mph but Cllr Sell, along with members of Ugley Parish Council, wants to see a 40mph limit introduced on both roads and will be putting pressure on Essex County Highways.

Cllr Sell received a "big response" from residents. He said: "This is a real issue for many people. Following the survey, I asked the parish clerk to include traffic limits as an agenda item at their council meeting in September.

"This was attended by many Home Farm Trust residents and I'm pleased to report the parish council unanimously supported a reduction of the speed limit in both roads to 40mph."

Cllr Sell's survey of residents in the affected roads also drew "overwhelming support" for a reduction in speed limits.

Among the comments he received included concerns over narrow roads, dangerous bends, lack of pavements and traffic volume.

One resident of North Hall Road highlighted that 'pedestrians are vulnerable to speeding motorists'.

Another raised concerns about motorists' 'behaviour on such a minor road'. That particular resident of Cambridge Road added that 'it is only a matter of time before there is a major accident, and as residents we are at greater risk of being involved in that accident'.

According to Cllr Sell's survey, a local postman, who did not want to be named, said he had 'never seen such a dangerous road' in 24 years in the job.

Feedback also suggested that a reduction in speed limits would fall in line with neighbouring villages.

Ugley Parish Council has now arranged a meeting with Essex County Highways officers and Cllr Sell will be in attendance to "strongly argue" for a reduction in the speed limits.

"Clearly there is a problem which needs urgent attention and I believe we have a case.
