Three Saffron Walden County High School students have joined a race against time to raise �50,000 for a little boy’s life-altering surgery.
Year 8 pupils Charlie Mills, Jess Thorogood and Anna Percival were outside Boots yesterday (Wednesday) selling cakes and Easter treats to raise money for 11-year-old Joel James, from Lincoln, who has Cerebral Palsy.
He needs to travel to American for Selective Dorzal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery which is carried out at St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri.
SDR is currently the only surgical option in reducing spasticity and will help Joel to sit, stand and walk.
The family need another �33,000 before the end of June if Joel is to get the operation.
Charlie, who is friends with Joel’s cousin Courtney Byatt, said: “I felt obliged to help because Courtney and I are particularly close after she helped me through my first day of school.”
