A DECISION on whether or not Saffron Walden will get a Sainsbury’s superstore will be announced on May 25, the Planning Inspectorate has confirmed.

It had previously been expected by April 23 at the latest but was put back because of the Government’s new planning guidelines revealed in March.

A public inquiry was held in February after Sainsbury’s appealed against Uttlesford District Council’s refusal in December 2010 to allow a 3,766 sq m store to be built on the Thaxted Road site.

Also part of the supermarket giant’s appeal is a second alternative application for a slightly smaller store on the same land, while a petrol station is included in both plans.
