AN up-and-coming director is visiting Saffron Screen next week for a showing of his debut film.

Eran Creevey's flim Shifty is an urban thriller, and is based on the director's teenage experiences in Harlow where he grew up.

The film deals with a friendship between old friends, and confronts the pasts and presents of the two main characters.

Mr Creevey said: "I started looking for stories and stuff that I could turn into a film and I thought what do I know?

"I know Essex and Harlow and so I thought, I'm going to write a film about my real experiences of life growing up in the suburbs in Essex because I feel that a lot of urban films tend to get it wrong."

Chris (played by Danny Mays) returns to his home town Dudlow to meet up with Shifty (played by Riz Ahmed) who he hasn't seen for years. Chris finds that Shifty has become a drug-dealer in his absence and has got into trouble.

The film follows 24 hours with Shifty, which is full of laughs and conflicts, reflecting on what is important in life.

"I'd go back to my hometown to see my parents and I'd hear some stories - things that happened - and I took inspiration from stories that I'd heard; stuff that had happened to me when I was growing up, and I condensed it into one story that's like a 24-hour film," added Mr Creevey.

Shifty will be screened on Friday July 10 at 8pm and will be followed by a question and answer session with the director.

Tickets are priced at 5.50, with evening concessions costing 4.50, and are available online at www.saffronscreen.com, from the Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre or the Saffron Screen box office.
