Shaun Whiter, 28, of Burrough Green, near Newmarket, married fiancée Charlotte Way at a private ceremony on Friday, July 21, wearing prosthetic limbs.

Shaun had both legs amputated after he was hit by a car while helping to change his friend Joey Abbs’ tyre at the side of Dullingham Road, Newmarket, on July 1 last year.

Joey also suffered serious leg injuries in the incident and driver Jan Adamec, from Haverhill, was jailed for three years and four months for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Recovering in hospital following the incident a year ago – Shaun vowed to fiancée Charlotte that he would walk down the aisle on the couple’s special day.

Thomas Ellwood, wedding photographer, said he has got to know the couple well and had to put down the camera himself for a short while to “wipe away a tear”.

He said: “The wedding was magnificent. Shaun said his main ambition was to walk down the aisle on his wedding day and he smashed it.

“If you think what that guy and his wife have been through in the last year or so, he is an absolute warrior, and his pure determination, eagerness to succeed is astonishing.

“I have the evidence to show he walked hand in hand with his wife up the aisle, the 156 guests will back me up on that.

“As you can imagine the church was filled with tears, joy, and celebration for the couple. I’ve got to know Shaun and Charlotte rather well and even I had to put aside the camera for a jiffy to wipe away a tear.

“The energy and positivity this man creates is humbling, so much so that the air ambulance crew flew over head and did a few loops to show their support.”

Shaun has involved himself with many charity events since the accident, including a 150-mile cycle in which the inspirational 28-year-old used a specially built hand bike.

He was also the guest speaker at Suffolk County Council’s Raising the Bar awards at Trinity Park, Ipswich, last month.
