Great Dunmow Rotary Club raised more than £1,250 to help end polio by dining on a frugal slice of bread and soup at Dunmow restaurant on October 25.

At the lunch, which took place at the Saracens Head Hotel, members exchanged their usual slap-up meal for a more homely fare.

The meal was part of the Purple4Polio campaign, led by the Rotary organisation which aims to show communities how they can help end polio.

The club were helped in their fundraising efforts by pub staff, who donated their tips to boost the total, as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

This month, Dunmow Rotary Club members are taking part in a reverse advent, donating an item a day to Uttlesford Foodbank.

Last year members collected more than 350kgs of goods for the foodbank.
