FIREFIGHTERS got more than they bargained for while working to release a Jack Russell dog which had got trapped in an underground pipe - by coming face to face with a badger!

Two appliances from Saffron Walden were called to the scene in Coal End Lane in Sewards End at 3.44pm yesterday (Wednesday).

Crews were initially unable to find the dog – but then found it in the company of a badger they didn’t previously know was there.

A team from the service’s Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) turned up to assist crews in locating the exact whereabouts of the Jack Russell and assist in digging out.

The USAR team used listening equipment to locate the dog and hand tools to dig it out.

A fire service spokesman said the dog was released by 7.54pm.
